About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Trenary, Michigan, Trenary Tavern is a true gem for anyone craving a genuine bar & grill experience infused with the comforting embrace of small-town hospitality. This locally owned barbecue restaurant and tavern boasts a rich blend of hearty flavors and a welcoming atmosphere that makes every visit feel like coming home.

Their housemade chili is a standout menu highlight — rich, savory, and perfectly spiced, it's a bowl that warms you from the inside out. But the culinary star here is undeniably their smoked meats, crafted with care and a smoky kiss from the tavern’s own backyard smoker. Patrons consistently rave about the brisket sandwich and pulled pork, both tender and bursting with smoky depth, served on perfectly toasted buns. For an added layer of deliciousness, diners love topping their pulled pork with fresh, crisp coleslaw and slathering on the house barbecue sauce, elevating each bite to a symphony of textures and flavors. Complement these dishes with their golden, beer-battered fries, a true “chef’s kiss” according to a delighted guest.

Stepping inside Trenary Tavern, you’re greeted by the nostalgic charm of a historic country tavern featuring unique tin ceilings that recall bygone eras, all while maintaining a cozy, unpretentious vibe. The friendly bartenders and staff—regularly recognized for their warmth and attentiveness—make you feel like a valued friend rather than just a customer. Whether you’re popping in for a quick refreshment or settling in for their celebrated Friday fish fry, the tavern’s atmosphere is quietly inviting. A well-stocked bar offers everything from classic beers to local favorites and crisp ciders, perfectly pairing with the diverse, flavorful menu.

What makes Trenary Tavern truly special is its authenticity. The pulled pork, beef, and even their homemade baked beans showcase a dedication to homemade goodness that many establishments strive for but few achieve. Customers describe this spot as a hidden “diamond in the rough,” a peaceful haven where quality food and genuine hospitality collide seamlessly.

Whether you find yourself craving a smoky, satisfying sandwich after a day exploring the Upper Peninsula or simply want to soak in the warmth of an old-school neighborhood tavern, Trenary Tavern delivers a refreshingly honest and delightful experience. It’s more than just a meal—it’s a taste of Trenary’s heart and soul.

We decided to give this place a try for lunch and we were pleasantly surprised! My husband had the brisket sandwich and I had the pulled pork - both were absolutely delicious! They both a hint of smoke from their smoker out back and came on toasted buns. I put the coleslaw on top of the pulled pork with BBQ sauce and their beer battered fries chefs kiss!! Definitely recommend!! Oh and for added fun we played Christmas music on their touchtunes machine

Just stopped in for a quick refreshment. This is an old, historic, off the highway country tavern. Bartender was friendly. It's a locally-owned tavern. They have Friday fish frys.

Man, talk about a diamond in the rough. Quiet bar and grill for a Friday night, but don't let it fool you. We had the pulled pork and the pulled beef sandwiches, candy pork, and baked beans (that was the vegetable). Everything was homemade, and everything was absolutely amazing. Their own smoked bacon, beef, and pork. Their own beans. We stopped on a whim since we couldn't find anywhere else to eat, and damn am I glad we did. This place just earned our yearly vacation bucket list. Seriously fantastic food, and just as good service.

If you are near the area, don't miss this place. What a great restaurant/bar. Cool old building (check out the tin ceiling), staff was as friendly as could be (shout out to Regan and Sarah). The atmosphere makes you feel like you are at home. Well stocked bar with classic beers as well as a number of delicious local favorites (and cider). The food is outstanding. Unexpectedly so. We happened to come in on Saturday to find they had smoked meat that day. I had the BBQ pork sandwich - tender and great smoky flavor. It came with a notably good creamy cole slaw, and I got beer batter fries. OMG, who invented this amazing side? Great crispy, crunchy outside, and delicious tender potato inside. Tasty, hearty meal and drinks at a reasonable price. Do yourself a favor and go.

The service was great the food was wonderful the atmosphere was very homestyle the waitresses definitely treated you like family they wanted to have around the ceiling was very ornate it was surprising when you walk in from the street to see you know just the small door outside but boy when you come in they even have free pool tables and they give you dessert each meal I enjoyed my time at this tavern and can't wait to go back
